Scalp Cooling and Hair Type: What to Expect for Every Texture

One of the most common questions we hear is some version of: "Will this actually work for my hair?" It's a smart question; hair type, texture, and even hairstyle habits can all play a role in scalp cooling success and comfort. Here's what patients with different hair types should know going in.

Fine or Thin Hair

Patients with fine or thin hair sometimes worry that they have "less to protect," but fine hair can respond very well to scalp cooling. With less hair insulation to work through, the key is proper cap fit.

Curly and Textured Hair

Curly and coily hair textures can achieve great results with scalp cooling when the hair is prepared properly. Before applying the Cooling Wrap, it is especially important to braid the hair into small, flat sections so the cap sits snugly against the scalp rather than resting on top of hair volume. Completely saturating the hair and roots with water or, if your hair expands with water, a leave in conditioner before applying the Cooling Wrap is essential for maximizing cooling effectiveness. Creating a clean middle part from the forehead to the nape of the neck also helps ensure both the left and right sides of the scalp receive even, consistent cooling throughout treatment.

What Matters Most, Regardless of Hair Type

Across every hair type, a few things consistently affect scalp cooling success:

  • Cap fit — a properly fitted cap is the single biggest factor in obtaining even cooling coverage.

  • Hair prep — parting, sectioning, braiding, and following your provider's prep instructions.

  • Consistency — using scalp cooling for every session of your regimen, not just some.

  • Gentle hair care — no heat styling, tight hairstyles, and harsh products during treatment.
